The novella by the well-known romantic writer E.T.A.
Hoffmann that became the basis of the ballet Coppélia tells the story of a young man who fell in love with a mechanical doll created by the toy maker Coppélius. But the creators of the ballet turned the dark mysticism of Hoffmann into a comedy, having told the story of a light quarrel and the subsequent reconciliation of the couple in love.
The ballet Coppélia to the music of Léo Delibes was staged for the first time by Arthur Saint-Léon at the Théâtre Impérial l'Opéra on 25 May 1870. Today, many opera houses worldwide have Coppélia, a classic of the genre, in their repertoire.
The story of love and deception, where 'dolls are so similar to people', inspired many choreographers, including the great Roland Petit. His Coppélia was presented in 1975 at the Ballet National de Marseille and at first aroused the indignation of ballet lovers, because Petit diluted the academic dance with frivolous variety show scenes. In Coppélia, ballerinas in tutus along with classical steps performed movements from the twist - a dance that was very popular at the time.
The performance will be transferred to the stage of the Astana Opera House by Roland Petit's permanent assistant Luigi Bonino, who danced Coppélius at the premiere, and Roland Petit performed this part ... until he turned 73.
Coppélia represents a rare genre of comedy in ballet art. Magic, transformations, adventures, tunes familiar from childhood and vivid diverse dances will give the audience an unforgettable experience.
