The Cherry Orchard

The Cherry Orchard

Description

A world-famous work, a Russian classic - Chekhov's ‘The Cherry Orchard’ on the stage of the Gorky Russian Drama Theatre. M. Gorky Russian Drama Theatre staged by Racha Makhataev.

The landowner Lyubov Ranevskaya, who has squandered all her fortune in Paris, returns to her family estate, the main virtue of which is the cherry orchard. The estate is ruined and put up for auction for debts. Yermolai Lopakhin, the family's former courtier, now a millionaire merchant, who is in love with Ranevskaya, offers to sell the orchard piecemeal to holidaymakers in order to save the estate. But for Ranevskaya to lose the house and garden - as to lose the memories of happy times of childhood and youth, spent here. In the time available before the auction, she and her family, brother and friends make unfulfilled plans to save the estate, bored and nostalgic for the past.

The estate is sold. And it is bought by the one whose father was not allowed further than the threshold - Lopakhin. And the new owner's first order is to cut down the entire cherry orchard.

The play reveals the problems of the decline of noble culture, the consequences of the abolition of serfdom, the invasion of progressive thinking of ‘new people’. But the historical conflict develops into the everyday problem of human pettiness and the ridiculousness of life. That is why the director retains Chekhov's genre definition of The Cherry Orchard as a comedy: the characters are ridiculous in their petty useless actions and empty conversations. Meanwhile, the only person most connected to the estate, the old footman Firs, remains in the locked house, forgotten by everyone, completely alone.
