For classical music lovers, Astana Opera presents a series of concerts as part of the traditional Double-Reed Festival, dedicated to woodwind instruments with double reeds.
The festival’s rich programme features compositions ranging from the Baroque era (J.S. Bach) to contemporary works, all written for woodwind instruments with a double-reed a sound-producing devices consisting of two blades from a special type of reed such as the oboe, English horn, bassoon and contrabassoon.
Due to the intense playing demands, a reed lasts for only a couple of performances, placing significant pressure on musicians who play double-reed instruments. Their role in the orchestra is especially esteemed. For example, the entire symphony orchestra relies on the oboe’s A note for tuning, as the oboe is considered the least susceptible to detuning.
The concerts were initiated by principal musicians Honoured Worker of Kazakhstan Damilya Makhpirova (oboe) and Asset Neldybayev (bassoon).
The concert features a guest of the festival Italian oboist Gianfranco BОRTOLATO.
The second concert of the festival will feature virtuosic, popular and rarely performed compositions for the oboe.
The project author, artistic director of the festival and conductor People’s Artist of Kazakhstan Abzal MUKHITDIN.
