Gogol. Petersburg
Description
Departments...departments...departments...departments...departments of the great northern capital, the thresholds of which are pounded by thousands of «little people» - provincials in search of justice, for the sake of realising their own dreams, but to no avail. This is where Gogol's Petersburg begins, a city where dreams and reality do not coincide, do not connect, like two parallel worlds. Their dreams come true only in the netherworld:
The three life stories of the three characters reveal the common theme of the play - the theme of the death of the human soul in a devilishly inhuman world. What happens in the finale? Everything turns into a mad dream-fantasmagoria, in which the ghost of Bashmachkin tears the overcoats off the officials, somewhere in the forests the wounded Captain Kopeikin goes on the prowl, and the petty official Poprishchin declares himself Spanish King Ferdinand VIII and shouts into the abyss: «Give me three horses as fast as a whirlwind! Shake, horses, and carry me out of this world!».
Stepping onto the modern stage, these three tragic lyricists, crushed by bureaucratic millstones, are a vivid image of Russia, of that Bird-Troika about which Gogol wrote for us, for posterity, in his prophetic novels.
The play intertwines the plots of three novels: «The Overcoat», «Notes of a Madman» and «The Tale of Captain Kopeikin», as well as motifs of other novels from the cycle «Petersburg Stories» by N.V.Gogol.
