Puss in Boots is a fairy tale by the famous French writer and poet Charles Perrault. It is included in his famous collection Mother Goose Tales, which was published in 1697, more than 320 years ago!
Everyone knows the story of how one of the miller’s sons received a meagre inheritance: a cat and some coins. The cat turned out to be a clever and loyal friend and asked to buy him some boots, using the last of the boy’s money. The cat then showed great wit, cleverly arranged everything, promoted his master to the position of Marquis and married him to the king’s daughter.
The Russian composer César Cui wrote the music for the children’s opera Puss in Boots, and it is full of charming melodies. This opera is also quite old over a hundred years old and was written in 1912. It first appeared on the theatre stage in 1913, not in Russia but in Rome, Italy, in the Theatre of the Little Ones (Puppet Theatre). This is how the opera Puss in Boots appeared to the public in the form of a puppet show, which was a real success, with at least 50 full houses in a row.
And in 2013, on the centenary of the first production, Puss in Boots premiered at the Grand Théâtre de Genève.
