Die Fledermaus (KATMK)
Description
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
«Die Fledermaus» is an operetta by Austrian composer Johann Strauss (son). German libretto by Karl Haffner and Richard Genet based on the farce «Imprisonment» by German playwright Julius Benedict and the vaudeville «The Clock with a Clock» by French authors Henri Melnyak and Ludovic Halévy. Strauss liked the cheerful, witty and festive spirit of the libretto and completed the entire score in 6 weeks. The premiere of this operetta took place on 5 April 1874 at the An der Wien theatre. At first, «Die Fledermaus» was not very popular, but nevertheless did not leave the repertoire of Viennese theatres. After 3 years, a remodelled version (under the title «Gypsy») won a resounding success in Paris, then the operetta began to be staged everywhere, including Australia and India. The final triumphant success came 20 years later, after the new version had appeared.

That is why the images of the wise Rosalind and Henry, who does not recognise his legitimate half in the next woman he likes, are so lovely.
