Maritza (KATMK)

The rich, young widow Countess Maritza, tired of pesky courtship, decides to announce in the newspapers that she is getting married to a man whose name she found on the poster for the operetta «The Gypsy Baron» by Koloman Zupan. «That's fine, what is not a husband, and it seems to be, and it seems not to be. Not everyone goes to operetta.» When Maritza and her friend Baroness Violetta arrive at her estate, she sees gypsies and her manager Tasillo, whom she has hired in absentia. Among the gypsies, Baroness Violetta sees Shandor, who loved her thirty years ago. He left for the gypsies when Violetta married someone else. Now she realises that she loved only him, Shandor. Meanwhile, it turns out that although not everyone goes to the operetta, the real Koloman Zupan is discovered nearby, in Varazdin, to whom his mother has shown a notice in the newspaper where Countess Maritza has announced her engagement to him.

The romantic Hungarian-Gypsy motifs with their dreaminess, capriciousness, with the exquisite glitter of improvisational jewellery tell us in the best possible way about the feelings of the heroine and the hero in love with her

The operetta is performed by the theatre's leading vocalists, chorus and ballet dancers.
