«Ruslan and Lyudmila» at Almaty Theatre

«Ruslan and Lyudmila» is a magical fairytale for the whole family - a timeless tale where the triumphant power of love conquers all obstacles, treachery meets its downfall, and good always prevails over evil.

Prince Vladimir the Radiant of Kyiv gives his youngest daughter, Lyudmila, in marriage to the brave warrior Ruslan. But in the midst of their wedding celebration, Lyudmila is abducted by the evil sorcerer Chernomor. The prince declares that whoever finds and returns his daughter shall receive half the kingdom and her hand in marriage.

Ruslan, along with three rivals - the grim and proud Rogday, the cowardly braggart Farlaf, and the young Khazar prince Ratmir - sets out on a perilous quest to rescue her.

On his journey, Ruslan faces countless challenges: he must overcome the schemes of the witch Naina, escape forest spirits and mermaids, and even confront a giant severed head. Through courage and cleverness, he wins a magical sword, discovers the secret of Chernomor’s power, and defeats him, freeing Lyudmila - only to find her under a sleeping spell.

As he carries the enchanted Lyudmila back to Kyiv with a heavy heart, the treacherous Farlaf ambushes and slays the unsuspecting Ruslan, seizing Lyudmila for himself.

But, as in all true fairytales, good ultimately triumphs. The forces of light side with the lovers, helping them break Naina's enchantments and vanquish Chernomor’s dark magic. Ruslan is revived, the lovers are joyfully reunited, and evil is not only defeated - but graciously forgiven.
